New horizons for collaborative partnership with the IAEA: capacity building for maintenance in member states

Within the framework of the trilateral agreement between the IAEA, JSC Concern Rosenergoatom and Rosatom Technical Academy (Rosatom Tech), a delegation of nuclear experts from the Islamic Republic of Iran performed a scientific visit from January 31 to February 07, 2018, devoted to the NPP outage optimization strategy.

The visit demonstrates the aptness of Rosatom Tech’s new strategic initiative, which encompasses maintenance planning&implementation. Responsibility for capacity building in this area falls upon the HR Centre of Rosatom Tech, headed by Mr I. Polev. The key instructor within visit was Dr M. Osetskaya, who possesses a wealth of experience in economic issues of  NPP outage optimization strategy.  During the visit, M. Osetskaya delivered a module of theoretical lectures on maintenance planning&implementation as well as economic aspects of improving the safety and reliability of NPP with VVER reactors, including the prospects of using the sipping method among others.

The practical component of the visit was highlighted by a technical tour of Balakovo NPP, where the Deputy Head of Balakovo NPP’s Training Center and Head of the Major Professional Development Program Mr A.Negodyaev, Head of the Methodological Centre for Training   Mr D.Shatkov, Head of the Maintenance Planning Department Mr T. Tyoplykh tackled the following issues:

  • integration of new technologies;
  • benefits of computerization in maintenance support;
  • optimizing repair work of radioactive equipment;
  • diagnosis of nuclear power plant systems and equipment;
  • improving reliability, and safety of NPP’s;
  • optimization of repair costs.

This was followed by a demonstration of emergency protection systems and diagnosis of reactor equipment, emergency control equipment for diagnosis of fuel rod tightness, new technology for fuel loading and operational methods.

The delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran visited the Department of Planning and Coordination, Department of Technical Training, Department of Quality Assurance, laboratory of metals, and took part in workshops dedicated to repair and construction and decontamination of the Balakovo NPP.
