Obninsk makes the next step to the status of of the International Center of Nuclear Sciences and Technologies
On the 26th of June, the Day of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy is celebrated in Russia in honor of the World’s First Nuclear Power Plant built in Obninsk. The first science-town in Russia proves the status of the International Center of Nuclear Sciences and Technologies by hosting the three major events on the special day: graduation of new generation-instructors, the official start of the Project «Park of Nuclear and Medicine Technologies» and a round table of young nuclear specialists and veterans of the nuclear industry in the video-conference format.
A two-year job-specific training programme developed by Rosatom Tech for the new-generation instructors has been completed by 16 trainees. The challenging programme with duration of almost 3,000 training hours included the on-the-job training which lasted for several months at the state-of-the-art Novovoronezh NPP-2, a two-week on-the-job training at Technatom Training Center in Spain, and many hours of acquiring the skills of delivering the materials to the audience by using the systematic approach to training. The young graduates of the main Rosatom High Education Institutes having the proficient English speaking skills were thoroughly selected for the unique training in order to realize the Rosatom’s international contracts valued in total 130 bln dollars. Now, the young talents are ready to train the foreign specialists of recipient-countries. The representatives of Rosatom State Corporation, JSC “Concern Rosenergoatom”, and Rusatom-International Network gathered together to present the young instructors with their diplomas.
The big start of the Innovation Center «Park of Nuclear and Medicine Technologies» was announced at the Conference in which a number of prominent figures took part, including the Governer of the Kaluga Region, Rosatom Corporation Director General and administrators of educational and training centers located in Obninsk. The big event opened at the new building of the business incubator and marked a start of activities in nuclear, pharmaceutical, and high technologies fields. 25 entities declared their interest in the Project. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, highlighted that the potential of Obninsk as a scientific and training center had been proved by many years of successful work performed by local centers. The Project is another step towards the International Center of Science and Technology being implemented in Obninsk and making it available for partners around the world.
The video conference “Nuclear Power for Sustainable Development” initiated by the Youth Committee of Rosatom Technical Academy brought together 35 participants from more than a dozen of organizations related to the nuclear field. The dialogue of young specialists with the experts of the field covered the challenges of nuclear industry in the future and specifics of knowledge management systems for the nuclear industry today. The representatives of the Organization of Nuclear Industry Veterans shared their views on the current trends and challenges in the nuclear field including the talk of Director General of Kaluga Cluster of Nuclear Technologies describing the shift of interest in nuclear technologies use from the electricity production to applications in medicine and science. The speaker from Rosatom Tech’s Youth Committee highlighted the current trend of improving the gender balance within the scope of the organization.
The events of June 26 in Obninsk reminded of the bright “pages” of the nuclear industry past and highlighted the challenges lying ahead in future.
