04 – 07 May, 2015 an International Workshop on Design, Engineering and Operational Aspects of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) was organized by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Islamabad with participation of the IAEA and experts from China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation. It is a matter of fact that for embarking states with lack of nuclear infrastructure the SMR technology might provide a vital option of power supply. Though Pakistan is not a newcomer county (currently there are 3 NPPs in operation and 4 under construction) SMRs remain to be of interest for Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission due to their flexibility with grids and high level of potential localization. Recently established SMR Directorate in PIEAS reviews the status of the available SMR projects to gain an experience in safety assessment and analysis of their potential deployment in Pakistan. Mr. M.H. Subki (Technical Lead, SMR Technology Development. Division of Nuclear Power, IAEA) highly evaluated the competence building on SMR in PIEAS and informed the participants about current activities with making the roadmap of SMR technology which is ongoing under his leadership in the IAEA. This activity largely relies on the mile-stone approach developed in the IAEA to support newcomer countries in developing their nuclear power infrastructure. ROSATOM-CICE&T was invited to this Workshop due to its reputation as a reliable provider of training courses oriented to infrastructure development for embarking states. Vice-Rector of ROSATOM-CICE&T Prof. Vladimir Artisiuk delivered two lectures “HRD Issues for nuclear infrastructure development in embarking states” and “Nuclear waste transmutation and forming the nuclear fuel cycle with enhanced resistance against unsanctioned proliferation”. In his lecture Prof. Artisiuk focused on the SMR technology related issues and activities performed in the ROSATOM-CICE&T (http://rosatomtech.com/?p=148, http://rosatomtech.com/?p=523, http://rosatomtech.com/?p=159). During the Workshop several working meetings with the top PIEAS officials were organized to discuss the potential cooperation between ROSATOM-CICE&T and PIEAS within the frameworks of Practical Arrangements with the IAEA.
