Russian and European educational organizations discussed plans for cooperation in the field of nuclear training and research

From February 27 to March 1, the main annual event of the European Nuclear Education Network – ENEN General Assembly – took place in Brussels (Belgium). As part of the meeting program, an Assembly special side-event on cooperation with the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear education was held. The meeting was attended by representatives of the ENEN-RU Forum – a collaboration of educational organizations in Europe and Russia, created during the implementation of ENEN RU I and ENEN-II projects. From the Russian side, representatives of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow State University, and St. Petersburg State University, Rosatom Tech and the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the EU and the Euratom participated in the meeting. On the European side – representatives of educational organizations of Slovenia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, Hungary and Romania and administration of ENEN.

The purpose of the meeting was to formulate a substantive agenda and format for the next stage of cooperation between the parties in the field of nuclear education and training. In accordance with the decisions taken at the final meeting of the ENEN-RU II project, the next project involves expanding the cooperation framework for research activities in the field of nuclear technologies and joint participation in international projects such as HORIZON 2020 and the OECD/NEA NEST. As a result of the event, the parties expressed mutual interest in continuing cooperation, outlined the scope of collaboration and demonstrated an interest in the following topics: VVER technology and safety assessment of NPP with VVER reactors, radiation technologies, advanced reactor technologies, and fuel cycles, benchmarking computer codes. On the Russian side, plans have been outlined for expanding the membership of cooperation with ENEN with the inclusion of a larger number of universities.

At the end of the meeting, the parties planned next steps: to hold a meeting in the XI International Forum “ATOMEXPO-2019” on April 15-16, 2019 in Sochi to agree on plans and format for further cooperation, and also to hold the next meeting of the ENEN-RU forum in late June in Obninsk in the framework of the events dedicated to the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the-first-in-the-world nuclear power plant.
