Training Course on Nuclear Probabilistic Safety Assessment in cooperation with Lloyd’s Register Nuclear Academy

An extensive 4-days training course on Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) started on the 4th of April 2017 in Saint Petersburg branch of ROSATOM-CICE&T. The course is delivered for the personnel of the ATOMPROEKT by the leading experts of the Lloyd’s Register Nuclear Academy (Sweden) Mr. Anders Olsson and Mrs. Lisa Ranlöf. Cooperation with European Partners is considered by ROSATOM-CICE&T as a high priority in view of expansion of Russian nuclear technology in European countries.

The PSA is a comprehensive, structured approach to identifying failure scenarios, constituting a conceptual and mathematical tool for deriving numerical estimates of risk.

Low Carbon Power Generation, such as nuclear power, is one of the business areas of Lloyd’s Register. The nuclear activities within Lloyd’s Register’s offices in Sweden are focused on deterministic and probabilistic safety assessment and licensing, which includes PSA Level 1, 2 and 3. In addition, Lloyd’s Register (Sweden) is developing the software that is used for performing PSA – RiskSpectrum and provision of high quality trainings using this software. RiskSpectrum PSA is an advanced fault tree and event tree software tool licensed for use at more than half of the world’s nuclear power plants, including ones in the Russian Federation.

The training course combines theory with practical examples from industry, as well as interactive sessions and hands-on practice using RiskSpectrum PSA software. It was tailored to individuals with some experience in PSA (PSA Part 1 or working experience). The participants are mainly Engineers-Technologists and Design Engineers, which use the RiskSpectrum PSA software in daily work. From ROSATOM-CICE&T side, Ms. Anastasiia Zherebilova – young specialist in the field of PSA – takes part in the training and supports the whole training process

The purpose of this course is to give participants an introduction to specific PSA topics such as low power and shutdown PSA, internal hazards, external hazards including seismic, Level 2 and Level 3 PSA.

In the framework of the training, a visit to the full-scale simulator of the floating nuclear power plant “Akademik Lomonosov”, located in Saint Petersburg branch of ROSATOM-CICE&T, was organized for Swedish experts to share experiences and promote further networking.
