Peter the Great Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg – one the most famous engineering school in Russian Federation – established a new platform for popularization of nuclear power technology – special International Energy School with the focus on Nuclear Engineering. The School was initiated in 2016 and has two annual sessions- in winter and summer. This year the Summer School was opened on 24, July. About one hundred students from China, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Iran, Mexico participated in the event with the purpose to broaden their knowledge in nuclear technology.
Peter the Great Polytechnic University – has historical links with founder of Russian Nuclear Technology – Academician I.Kurchatov (1903-1960) who started his academic career in this university in late 1920s. Several outstanding graduates of the university made a significant contribution in mastering nuclear technology. Among them are Academician I.Kikoin (1908-1984) who was responsible for development of methods and techniques for uranium enrichment and Academician I.Alikhanov (1904-1970) – leader of heavy-water reactor technology in the USSR.
The first day of the School was devoted to specifics of Russian nuclear technology and this was covered in the lectures delivered by Prof. Vladimir ARTISIUK – Vice-Rector of ROSATOM-CICE&T. Three topics were outlined: Brief History of Nuclear Power Development in Russia, Nuclear Infrastructure Development in Newcomer Countries and Advanced Fuel Cycles with Enhanced Proliferation Resistance. Being involved in supporting the nuclear infrastructure development in embarking states, ROSATOM-CICE&T emphasizes the importance of tuning the university programmes available in national universities to facilitate the HRD planning for the National Nuclear Power Programmes. Cooperation between industry and universities on both sides – vendor country and embarking state is essential part of the process. In this the ROSATOM-CICE&T plays the role of catalyzer.
The format of the School is considered to be an effective platform for “nuclearization” of postgraduates and young specialists. Another event of the same format is coming in St Petersburg –the Joint ROSATOM-IAEA Nuclear Energy Management School . This starts in St Branch of ROSATOM-CICE&T on 04 September and will have two session – in St Petersburg and in Obninsk – the cradle of nuclear power technology – the city in which the First-in-the-World Nuclear Power Plant was put into operation in 1954.
