New specialists from the interested Member States gained the fundamental knowledge on nuclear security during the second session of the IAEA International School on nuclear security that was held online from 31 May to 4 June 2021.
This school is part of a series of international and regional nuclear security schools that the IAEA conducts in many regions and in various languages. Whereas the first session of the School, held in 2020, was theoretical, the second session became practical. Moreover, the practical exercises were conducted in a virtual format. During an eventful week, the participants were taught through interesting presentations and videos, they were engaged in fruitful subject matter discussions.
The unique features of the Nuclear Security School in Russian were practical online video demonstrations of technical equipment of physical protection system of nuclear facilities, as well as online real time demonstrations of devices used for radiation monitoring and detection of radioactive materials that are outside of regulatory control. Practical demonstrations were prepared and successfully carried out by specialists from the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Institute of the Rosatom Technical Academy and the Scientific and Technical Centre “Nuclear Physics Research”.
Additionally, for the first time, the IAEA Nuclear Security School was held in the Russian language, one of the Agency’s official languages. This provided a great opportunity to many Russian-speaking specialists, who do not speak English, to join the training and find out up-to-date information on the interested topic.
At the 5-days school’s week, the newcomer specialists from various countries gained knowledge that are important for understanding the international approaches in the field of nuclear security, as well as and for implementation the measures necessary to fulfil States’ obligations in accordance with the international legal framework in the field of nuclear security.
Both the specialists of the Rosatom Technical Academy and the IAEA hope that the International School of Nuclear Security in Russian becomes a regular event as another valuable step to consolidate the international efforts in strengthening nuclear security.
