The Vth International School on Radiation Technologies of the World Nuclear University started at the Rosatom Technical Academy this week. The school is one of the key products of the World Nuclear University and is held every two years in different countries.
Rosatom Technical Academy accumulated experience of cooperation with the IAEA in establishing nuclear infrastructure in the newcomer countries and offered services as a center for educational competencies in supporting establishment of national centers for nuclear science and technology (CNNT) and as a scientific and educational hub for cooperation with relevant international organizations.
The school will present Obninsk as a nationally distributed CNNT. 28 students from 21 countries and 5 continents of the world will get acquainted with scientific and technical competencies and the material base in the field of research reactors (Karpov Scientific Research Institute of Physics and Chemistry (NIFKhI)), radiation technologies for agriculture and environmental monitoring (FSBIU VNIIRAE), production of isotopes (NIFKhI, SSC RF-IPPE), nuclear medicine (Medical Radiological Research Center named after A.F. Tsyb) and industrial application of nuclear technologies (LLC Tekleor).
The rector of the Rosatom Technical Academy Mr Yuri Seleznev, addressing the participants of the School on Radiation Technologies, read out the government telegram of the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Mr Gennady Sklyar.
“This unique event allows us to consider Obninsk, Russia’s 1st science city, as an international center for nuclear science and technology and demonstrate the competencies of the personnel of the city’s enterprises and their optimal interaction. I wish the school participants every success in creating and developing an international network of specialists in radiation technologies”.
Along with the head of the World Nuclear University Ms Patricia Wieland, the opening ceremony was attended by Advisor to the Director General of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Mr Vladimir Artisyuk, Head of the Radiation Technology and Isotope Products Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mr Joao Osso, and Scientific Director of the RT School, former IAEA Deputy Director General – Director of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications Mr Ramamurti Natesan.

The World Nuclear University was established in 2003 by two industry organizations – WANO and the World Nuclear Association, as well as two intergovernmental organizations – the IAEA and the OECD NEA.
A foundation for holding of the RT School in Russia was the Special Scientific Session on Nuclear Medicine, organized in 2006 on the basis of the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training (currently – Rosatom Technical Academy) with the support of the IAEA and the World Nuclear University.
In November 2015 the head of the WNU, Patricia Wieland visited the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training of Rosatom.
In February 2019, at the Northern Nuclear Forum in the city of Helsinki, an Agreement between the Rosatom Technical Academy and the World Nuclear Association on having the RT School in the city of Obninsk was signed, under the auspices of which the WNU operates.
On May 20–21, 2019 the head of educational projects at WNU Silke Klassen visited Obninsk within the preparation for the Vth School on Radiation Technologies.
The School on Radiation Technologies of the World Nuclear University is held in Obninsk from October 14 to 25.
