Early involvement of students in professional activities in the nuclear industry

Rosatom Technical Academy (Rosatom Tech) actively cooperates with the basic universities of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, developing the connection of the nuclear industry with academic structures through the involvement of young talents in professional activities. A practical example of such cooperation is interaction with the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” (NRNU MEPhI), the leading nuclear university in Russia, and the basic university of ROSATOM. Annually, more than 1,500 students graduate from NRNU MEPhI. The main task is to preserve the trained young personnel, assist with professional orientation, as well as acquaint students with the main areas of activity of ROSATOM, and provide an opportunity to develop practical skills at nuclear power plants and other enterprises of
JSC Rosenergoatom.

To attract more young specialists with high potential, ROSATOM is implementing a practical training for students at its enterprises. Rosatom Tech is also interested in attracting talented employees, actively helps them start a career and stay in the industry. Nuclear industry is also underrepresented with women specialists. Rosatom Tech actively advocates for maintaining gender balance in the workplace, creating conditions for the development of the potential of young girls.

A successful example of the implementation of the tasks set for the professional training of graduates is Milana Ozerina, Specialist in International Activities of the Center for International Cooperation at Rosatom Technical Academy, a graduate of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) NRNU MEPhI. In June 2021, Milana defended her graduation thesis on the topic “Generation IV nuclear energy systems and the international nuclear non-proliferation regime” under the leadership of Mr Vladimir Artisyuk, Adviser to the Director General of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, and received a bachelor’s degree with honors.

In August 2021, Milana Ozerina successfully passed the entrance tests for admission to the Master’s programme in the Institute of International Relations NRNU MEPhI to continue research.-имени-1fesa-e1629112811393.jpg

At the moment, Milana is organizing the NEA Mentoring workshop with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency for female students of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University named after Peter the Great, which will be held in October 2021 on the platform of the III Eurasian Women’s Forum. The event aims to demonstrate a successful example of building the careers of women leaders in the nuclear industry in different countries, thereby attracting more women to the energy sector.

Milana is actively involved in youth activities and she is the Coordinator for Eastern Europe of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Youth Group, where she participates in projects aimed at establishing links with other international organizations and youth programmes.

European Nuclear Young Generation Forum (ENYGF 2021) will be held in Tarragona, Spain from September 27 to 30, 2021, which is seen as an international platform for knowledge transfer, discussion, and exchange of best practices in various areas of nuclear energy. To speak on these topics and participate in discussions at the ENYGF 2021, a grant was awarded to Milana from the European Nuclear Society Young Generation Network.

The participation of a representative of Rosatom Tech in the ENYGF 2021 will demonstrate the presence of professional young people in Russia and follow modern trends which in line with the United Nations (UN) youth strategy in support of the UN 2030 Agenda.

Thus, young employees of Rosatom Tech show themselves not only in professional activities during working hours, but also actively engage in scientific activities, participate in international projects, demonstrating the presence of professional young personnel in Russia.
