The Vth International School on Radiation Technologies of the World Nuclear University was held at the Rosatom Technical Academy on 14-25 of October.
The School was attended by 28 students from 21 countries and 5 continents of the world. The two-week curriculum was filled with lectures and practical exercises on various topics in the field of radiation technologies delivered by 24 lecturers from 18 Russian and international scientific and research organizations. Along with the head of the World Nuclear University Ms Patricia Wieland, in the School take part Head of the Radiation Technology and Isotope Products Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mr Joao Osso, Advisor to the Director General of ROSATOM Mr Vladimir Artisyuk, Scientific Director of the RT School, former IAEA Deputy Director General – Director of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications Mr Ramamurti Natesan. The IAEA Deputy Director General and head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications – Ms Najat Mokhtar attended the School as a special guest. Ms Najat Mokhtar delivered a lecture on “Meeting the Basic Human Needs through Nuclear Science and Technology – the UN Sustainable Development Goals”.
The school presented Obninsk as a national distributed Center of Nuclear Science and Technology. In the framework of technical tours programme, participants got acquainted with scientific and technical competencies and the material base of local organizations. In particular, in the Medical Radiological Research Center named after A.F. Tsyb participants learned about the capabilities of modern nuclear medicine in cancer treatment. The Karpov Scientific Research Institute of Physics and Chemistry and Leypunsky Institute of Physics and Power Engineering demonstrated its activities in the area of isotopes production. Industrial applications of radiation technologies were presented by the food irradiation center LLC Tekleor – the first Russian center for antimicrobial processing of food products with accelerated electrons. In addition, participants visited the museum of the World’s First Nuclear Power Plant and the Anatoly Tsyb memorial cabinet museum.
As Ms Alesia Iunikova (head of the Project Office on Nuclear Infrastructure) noted – different applications of radiation technologies open completely new horizons for newcomer countries, and ROSATOM’s integrated offer on Centers of Nuclear Science and Technology is a starting point for the development of nuclear power programmes as well.

The World Nuclear University was established in 2003 by two industry organizations – WANO and the World Nuclear Association, as well as two intergovernmental organizations – the IAEA and the OECD NEA. A foundation for holding of the RT School in Russia was the Special Scientific Session on Nuclear Medicine, organized in 2006 on the basis of the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training (currently – Rosatom Technical Academy) with the support of the IAEA and the World Nuclear University.
In November 2015 the head of the WNU, Patricia Wieland visited the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training of ROSATOM. In February 2019, at the Northern Nuclear Forum in the city of Helsinki, an Agreement between the Rosatom Technical Academy and the World Nuclear Association on having the RT School in the city of Obninsk was signed.
