The Moscow and Novovoronezh branches of the Rosatom Technical Academy received a delegation of 14 representatives of the nuclear industry of Uzbekistan. The visit was organized within the framework of an agreement with the IAEA on an extra-budgetary contribution to the implementation of technical cooperation projects of the Agency for the Development of Nuclear Infrastructure, as well as within the framework of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan on personnel training for the emerging nuclear industry of the republic.
During the visit, participants were introduced to the key aspects of the design and operation of both large and small nuclear power plants. Technical Academy specialists discussed safety principles, approaches to managing radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, and reference Russian reactor technologies, such as KLT-40 and RITM-200. Additionally, the prospects for using SMRs for heat supply, water desalination, and various industrial processes were explored.
The practical part of the program was held at the Novovoronezh branch of the academy. Participants were shown how a fully functional simulator for a control center worked. The expert group also visited the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant. On site, Uzbek specialists discussed the preparation and quality control of repair work and visited the engine room of power unit number 6, where they saw the K-1200 turbine unit in operation.
“The technical visit of the representatives of the Uzatom Agency and the Directorate for the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants to the Novovoronezh NPP exceeded expectations and was a valuable source of practical experience. During the visit, we had the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the advanced technologies used in the modern nuclear power industry and gain an understanding of safe operations. It is especially important to note the high level of professionalism and safety culture at the Novovoronezh NPP. The knowledge gained during this visit will contribute to the strengthening of our professional competencies and confidence in the nuclear energy industry. This experience is a significant step towards the implementation of the project for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.” - Elmira Gabbarova, Head of the Department of Science, Innovation, Standardization, and Methodology at the Uzatom Agency, emphasized the importance of this visit and its impact on the future development of the nuclear energy sector in Uzbekistan.
For reference:
On May 24th, 2024, the Rosatom State Corporation and the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed the world's first export contract for the construction of a low-power nuclear power plant designed by Russia in Uzbekistan.
The Rosatom Technical Academy is a modern international multidisciplinary training center for the nuclear industry workforce. Since 2019, the organization has been designated as an IAEA Collaborating Center. In October 2024, the Technical Academy renewed its agreement and became the first and only center to cooperate with the IAEA in five programmatic areas, including the promising field of small-scale nuclear technologies. Over the years of collaboration, within the frameworks of the agreement more than 80 international events have been held, attended by over 2,000 participants from around the world.
