The specialists from Rosatom Technical Academy joined the webinar on «National Market Perspectives Regarding SMR Market Development – Emerging Countries Have a Conversation on Deployment» conducted by International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC). This is the first webinar of series planned by the IFNEC to cover the wide range of challenges in the SMR development starting from financing and licensing issues to hybrid system concept discussion. This was especially interesting topic in the view of recent news from Russian Far East – first-of-a-kind floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) “Akademic Lomonosov” has been fully commissioned in Pevek, Chukotka region on May 22nd.
Webinar covered the promising topic of Small Modular Reactors development around the world touching the specifics of four countries: Jordan, Kenya, Poland and Estonia. Presentations of high-profile speakers opened remarks by Mr Shi Lishan, chair of the meeting and IFNEC Steering Group Vice-Chair Ms Suzie Jaworowski, IFNEC Steering Group Chair and keynote message delivered by Mr William D. Magwood, IV, Director-General, OECD NEA on how SMR can Enhance Embarking Country Access to Nuclear.
During their talks, speakers expressed intentions to see the first SMR design ready to be deployed in their country by the end of this decade and discussed the challenges foreseen along this process, including licensing, security of fuel supply and decommissioning.
Participation in the webinar by new generation of Rosatom Tech experts continued process of building their competences in the field of advanced reactors technologies initiated in March of this year at NICE Future webinar series. Involvement in discussion of perspective topics shaping future of energy mix around the world by the next generation of trainers and nuclear technology ambassadors gives opportunity to tack the changes nuclear industry is facing in near future. The systematic participation in and discussion of webinars by Rosatom Tech young generation is a part of Rosatom Tech’s organization policy aimed at active engagement of youth in discussion SMR technology as a tool for sustainable development efforts, which is in line with UN Youth Strategy 2030.
